"The Monopolized Project:" An Excursion Into Immersive Exhibition

Debuting to the public in Atlanta, GA on September 23, 2017, "The Monopolized Project" is a community-based art installation project that combines film, mixed medium, and multimedia art design with participatory exhibition and interpretation. Enhanced by digital technology, the exhibit is designed as an immersive experience that transports the audience into the "monopolized universe" and the body of work, effectively blurring the lines of imagination and reality.

“Monopolized:,” the film, vividly paints a portrait of Black life in America. As the nucleus of the “monopolized universe,” it will be the featured exhibit of the art installation which has been designed as a reinterpretation of the popular board game Monopoly. The exhibition, debuting this month, will invite its audience to actively participate and engage with Blackness in theory as a social construct and in spirit through the shared experience of community.

The collaborative exhibition is designed to project Black empowerment, integrity, elevation, and relativity. The artists, ZANDERLAND and Khaldun Oluwa, evoked the collaboration out of the need to disseminate powerful representations of Blackness. In service to the community, the collective works to counteract the negative impact of dehumanizing imagery of Black culture that is perpetuated in mainstream media. The artists view the exhibition as “a necessity manifested during a culturally significant moment in the United States and around the world…as WE resist against hegemonic control of mediated culture, resist against the exploitation of Black culture, and resist against the marginalization of Black bodies throughout the diaspora.”
